So as you may know, I drive a 98 mustang with a (sigh) auto transmission. Recently, the mechanism that allows the gear selector to move will not disengage, leaving the car stuck in park and the selector immovable. I have tried using the handbrake to take pressure off and replacing the brake master switch and the only thing that worked was to take the housing off and use a pen to physically push the locking mechanism off. Any suggestions? Can post pictures when I get home if you need.

They don't come with a shift-lock override?

I'm sure there is but the owners manual has no mention of it and I couldn't find one online. I will make a post on a sn95 forum or pick up a Haynes manual tomorrow. Thanks for the idea!

Step 1, acquire a suitable oxy-acetylene cutting torch.

Step 2, From the front to the back, begin to bisect said car into equal halves. Once you have one car and two halves , see step 3.

Step 3, discard both halves.

Look at the linkage under the car on transmission.

FIX.

you got a shift interlock issue. Now under the bezel that covers the base of your shifter column you should see a white tab that you can press down, once that is pressed down you can put the car in gear. I believe your fix is going to involve replacing the shifter mechanism so see if you can find a junk yard to pull one from. You could also get underneath the car and play with the linkages and see if they are properly adjusted. But the only way to get it into gear is by pushing that white tab down.

I had a car that did that . I had to rock the steering wheel while moving the shifter to make it work .

Thanks! Yeah pushing the white tab is exactly what I've been using as a temporary fix.

Those can be a bit finicky about the shifter cable adjustment.

Get a Chilton's service manual and adjust the cable.
